Talk to someone in the same boat about...

First Lady Melania Trump revealed her infamous campaign to put a stop to bullying and drug use Monday afternoon at the White House, and the internet reacted by making fun of her accent.

The campaign, with the slogan “BE BEST,” is intended to create a healthy lifestyle for students, both on social media and in the classroom, as well as preventing opioid abuse among students. In her speech in front of the White House, Melania stated:

“There are too many critical issues facing children today, so the three main pillars of BE BEST will include well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse. We can and should teach children the important of social and self-awareness, positive relationship skills, and responsible decision making.”

The sole purpose of her campaign, however, was clearly missed by many online influencers as minutes after users began making fun of the First Lady for her accent, looks and grammar:

It turns out, that her well-intentioned address came just three days after her husband, renowned cyberbully President Donald Trump, had retweeted a meme that showed him hitting a golf ball which ended up striking Hillary Clinton.

Some tweeters suggested that Melania Trump might want to bring up the issue of online bullying with her husband while others asked if there was a presidential exemption. Although Melania’s campaign is ironic considering her current situation, attacking someone online for the things they can’t change about themselves, such as their looks and accent, is even more ironic. Especially when that person is making the effort to take a stand against bullies on a global scale.

To make the world a better place, we all need to be the change. Just because you don’t agree with someone else’s opinion and who or what they stand for, doesn’t give you a free pass to be a keyboard warrior.

Remember to be respectful when disagreeing with someone, don’t go after their appearance or use hateful words, instead argue based on fact. Bullying is a serious offence that can destroy people’s lives. We all need to take a stand against it, no matter who we’re fighting alongside.
