About the Domestic Violence category

A safe space for anyone experiencing family or domestic violence, and those supporting them. You’ll be believed here, and nobody will tell you what to do.

If you’re in immediate danger, call 000. For confidential 24/7 support, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732.

Abuse is rarely obvious from the inside, particularly when it isn’t physical. It builds slowly, it’s often mixed in with love, and the person doing it is frequently the same person telling you that you’re imagining it.

If you’ve found your way here wondering whether what’s happening counts — that question is worth taking seriously.

What people talk about here

Recognising abuse that leaves no marks: control over money, isolation from family, monitoring, threats, and the constant management of someone else’s mood. Working out whether to stay or go, and the many good reasons people don’t leave immediately. Supporting a friend or family member who isn’t ready. Being a parent in this situation. The after-effects that arrive once you’re safe, which often surprise people. And rebuilding — housing, money, confidence, and trust.

Men experience family violence too, and are welcome here.

Staying safe while you post

Your device may not be private. If someone has access to your phone or computer, they may be able to see what you read and write here. 1800RESPECT has guidance on covering your tracks online, and using a friend’s phone or a library computer is safer if you’re unsure.

Post anonymously. Don’t include your name, suburb, workplace, your children’s school, or anything else that could identify you or your partner — including in details that seem harmless individually.

Please don’t post specific escape plans, refuge locations, or the details of how someone got out. Those details can put people in danger if the wrong person reads them. A specialist worker at 1800RESPECT can safety-plan with you privately, and that’s genuinely the right place for it.

How to use this category

You will be believed here. Nobody will ask why you didn’t leave sooner, and nobody will push you to make a decision you’re not ready for.

This is peer support, not crisis intervention — please reach the services above alongside it.
