About the Depression category

For low moods and the heavy days. Honest conversation about depression — what helps, what doesn’t, and getting through when doing anything feels like too much.

Depression isn’t sadness turned up. It’s more often a flattening — of energy, interest, and the sense that anything you do will matter. Which makes it uniquely hard to seek help for, because the illness itself argues against bothering.

If that’s where you are, you don’t need to write anything articulate here. A few lines is enough.

What people talk about here

Not knowing why you feel this low, particularly when nothing obvious is wrong. Days when getting out of bed is the whole achievement. Whether it’s depression or a rough patch, and how long is long enough to wait. Talking to a GP and what to say. Antidepressants — starting them, side effects, and the odd flat period before they work. Depression that arrives with something else: chronic illness, a new baby, grief, retirement. Supporting a partner or parent through it without disappearing yourself. And the recovery nobody warns you is uneven.

Support beyond the forum

Peer support helps, but it isn’t treatment. Depression responds well to proper care, and getting it is worth the effort it takes:

  • Beyond Blue — free 24/7 phone and online support for depression and anxiety. Call 1300 22 4636.
  • Lifeline — 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention counselling. Call 13 11 14.
  • Black Dog Institute — free, research-backed digital tools for managing depression.
  • Medicare Mental Health — free government advice line connecting you to local services. Call 1800 595 212.

If you’re thinking about suicide, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 if you’re in immediate danger. You can also post in our Suicide category, where people understand.

How to use this category

Nobody will tell you to go for a walk. Nobody is keeping track of how often you post the same thing.

Post on bad days, not just once you’ve come out the other side. The middle of it is when this is most useful — and reading someone describe exactly what your last three weeks felt like is worth more than most advice.
