For the first months with a new baby — sleep deprivation, bonding, and postnatal mental health. Honest support, without the pressure to enjoy every moment.
The gap between how the first months are described and how they actually are catches almost everyone out. It’s relentless, disorienting, and frequently lonely, and being told to treasure it doesn’t help.
This category is for saying the honest version. Both parents welcome, and partners too.
What people talk about here
The overwhelm of the first weeks, when nothing is routine yet. Sleep deprivation and what it does to your capacity to cope. Not feeling instantly bonded, which is far more common than anyone admits and doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you. Feeding, whichever way it’s going. Wondering whether what you’re feeling is the baby blues or something more. Partners feeling sidelined or struggling themselves. Relationship strain. Loneliness on parental leave. Going back to work. And the guilt attached to every one of these.
Support beyond the forum
- PANDA — national perinatal anxiety and depression helpline for parents and partners. Call 1300 726 306.
- Pregnancy, Birth and Baby — Australian Government helpline for pregnancy, birth and early parenting. Call 1800 882 436.
- Beyond Blue — free 24/7 mental health support. Call 1300 22 4636.
- raisingchildren.net.au — Australian Government-funded, evidence-based parenting information.
Postnatal depression and anxiety are common and very treatable, and they can affect either parent. If low mood, anxiety or dread has lasted more than two weeks, please talk to your GP, midwife or child health nurse — earlier is genuinely better.
If you’re having frightening or intrusive thoughts, that’s a reason to seek help urgently rather than a reason to hide it. Call PANDA on 1300 726 306, or 000 if you or your baby are at risk. These thoughts are more common than parents realise and do not mean you’re a danger to your child — but you shouldn’t carry them alone.
How to use this category
This isn’t a place for feeding, sleep-training or parenting-philosophy debates. There’s enough of that elsewhere, and none of it helps someone posting at 4am on their fourth broken night.
For anything medical about your baby, please call your child health nurse or Pregnancy, Birth and Baby — this is peer support, not clinical advice.
